Imagine walking into Sibelius' own forest and finding a male choir singing his music. That is exactly how we are starting this year's festival. Later in the evening you will hear some of Mother Nature's favorite pieces and get to know what a "saimaannorppa" is.

Sunday 25.7.2010

Marjatta Meritähti is a legendary music educator and we are thrilled to have her with us for a children's concert in the woods. UMO Big Band presents an ear-opening event including the premiere of an electric violin concerto written by musical explorer Kirmo Lintinen.

We will probably need some gentle sounds afterwards and a viola da gamba recital should do the trick.

The folk fiddle group JPP is a national treasure. Award-winning chamber musician Ralf Gothóni takes us inside the magic circle with Schubert and Schnittke. Brilliant sax man Jukka Perko brings his quartet to the Ainola forest for an exploration of the creative moment. There will be some talking in Finnish so make sure to become friends with a native who can translate.

The software Max/MSP is one of the most important developing areas in electronic music. These fascinating sounds will put you in the right mood for a concert hosted by composer Timo Hietala.

Timo is one of Finland's true musical multitalents and we are jolly excited to work with him. The late night gig will be an exploration of popular music with connections to good causes. (Yes, like We Are The World.)

Thursday 29.7.2010

The endless gossiping about Paganini's dealings with Satan got a new twist when Finns started playing his music. Now there's talk of crisis meetings in the Vatican. Also, Chopin's music gets a loving treatment from the harmonica quartet Sväng. Not to be missed.

Friday 30.7.2010

Our Orchestra is preparing an exceptional performance of the crown jewel of chamber music, Franz Schubert's Octet. We are looking for a new way of presenting this masterpiece and its composer. Our Festival will end on a high note.
